If we were to utter the phrase “Greek Wedding”, there are certain to be a particular series of images that come to mind. Blue-domed churches, whitewashed buildings perched on the edge of cliffs, bold colors, bright sun, extravagance and sweeping ocean views.
While these scenes do indeed exist, they are not necessarily representative of Greek beauty in the deeper sense of the word. Presented with the opportunity to photograph in Athens with Vasia Photography for Boheme Workshops, we wanted to explore the concept of beauty further and create something authentic and honest. Something culturally true and something personal. When we spoke of a Greek bride on her wedding day, the local neighborhood and her church were central to the experience. These small churches are rich in history and a focal point of daily life for the communities of which they are a part. We pictured our bride making the journey to her nearby church where she would exchange vows with her loved one before joining family and friends for an intimate dinner party overlooking the sea at sunset.
We drew inspiration from the natural environment, the surrounding architecture as well as the color palette and textures provided by the landscape. The tonality of the stone ground surrounding the church flowed seamlessly towards the ocean and the rocky outcrops forming the coastline.
We foraged many blooms and foliage from the nearby village with the daphne and olive leaf a subtle connection to the floral detailing on our bride’s gown. We hope the contemplative simplicity of these images encourages a bride to think of the moments, experiences and spaces that are an important part of her wedding story.
We are honored to be a part of the Boheme Workshops and will be travelling to Greece again in September to provide florals and styling as part of their upcoming 5-day fine art photography experience.
These images were captured as a part of our first visit in June this year. You can see the full feature on Wedding Sparrow, and find all of the details regarding September's workshop here.
